Write, and See, Time

“The solace of such work as I do with brain and heart lies in this—that only there, in the silences of the painter or the writer can reality be reordered, reworked and made to show its significant side.”

Lawrence Durrell

Introduction

Writing has always been a way for me to make sense of my life, as well as the means to actually remember my life. From my years of journal, poetry, and prose writing, I have found that my own life often makes for the most interesting reading, allowing me to make sense of what has happened since I last looked at myself. As Lawrence Durrell states in his novel Justine, “What I most need to do is to record experiences, not in the order in which they took place—for that is history—but in the order in which they first became significant for me” (1961, 115). Understanding isn’t a matter of simply following the storyline of my life, but finding the life-changing moments and understanding how things flow together, connected, and how these threads of the past make their presence known by my own present position in life.
